The Bubble Chair
Inspired by Eero Aarnio
The Ball or Globe Chair was designed by using one of the simplest geometric forms - the sphere. Eero Aarnio produced a remarkable result - a completely unconventional shaped chair.
The walls of the Globe Chair repel ambient noise and it becomes a "room within a room". In 1968, Eero Aarnio developed his transparent version and called it the Bubble.
"After I had made the Ball Chair I wanted to have the light inside it and so I had the idea of a transparent ball where light comes from all directions. The only suitable material is acrylic which is heated and blown into shape like a soap bubble. Since I knew that the dome-shaped skylights are made in this way I contacted the manufacturer and asked if it would be technically possible to blow a bubble that is bigger than a hemisphere. The answer was yes! I had a steel ring made, the bubble was blown and cushions were added and the chair was ready. And again the name was obvious: BUBBLE." Eero Aarnio.
Manufactured from tough acrylic and stainless steel, this version of the Bubble Chair is versatile and easily washable. We do not use Perspex, which cracks at the top around the weight stress points. The Bubble Chair comes with red, black or silver cushions and the stainless steel suspension chain.
This Bubble Chair is manufactured to take up to a maximum weight of 135 kilos (approx. 21 stone).
