The Eames Polypropylene Side/Dining Chair DSR
When the advances in plastics technology, developed during the Second World War, became accessible to the general populace, the Eameses decided to use this material in their furniture.
Their first fibreglass chair was made in 1948 as a prototype for the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design, organized by MoMa (Museum of Modern Art). Subsequently manufactured by Zenith Plastics, this chair was mass produced out of the same plastic employed by the company in its radars. This was the first commercial use of plastic for seating.
So, in 1950, the Eameses had achieved their goal of mass-producing furniture with curves.
This version has a base which is made from chromed wire rods in the manner of the Eiffel Tower. We also offer the Eames Polypropylene Side/Dining Chair DSW with turned beech legs.
NB: Although inspired by the original Charles and Ray Eames design this product is a reproduction and is not manufactured by Vitra Ltd, Vitra Patente AG or
Vitra Collections AG. However, as the design(s) are over 50 years old our reproductions do not contravene any UK design copyrights.
