The Eames RAR Rocker (RAR = rocking armchair rod)
The Eames RAR rocking chair with Eiffel tower base and beech runners, was released in 1948.
First presented at The Museum of Modern Art (New York) in the International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture, the moulded rocking chair was the first fibreglass chair to be mass-produced. The RAR’s clean, simple form was sculpted to fit the body. Said to be the most significant furniture design of the 20th century, the Eames RAR Rocker has been put back into production for the first time in more than 30 years. The RAR features a durable and robust fibreglass shell with a deep seat pocket, integrated armrests, high backrest and waterfall seat edge for lounge-quality comfort. The iconic Eames wire base is set atop two beech runners for a smooth rocking motion that brings enjoyment to nurseries, lounges, living rooms, offices and bedrooms.
Some producers make a version of the Eames rocking chair which is injection moulded from textured polypropylene, a process used to manufacture low cost plastic garden furniture.
Like the original, our chair is hand made from fibreglass which is then given 3 coats of gloss acrylic paint.
Fibreglass is a very robust and malleable material which allows the designer to incorporate curves and twists. Our lacquered paint finish is of a very high standard and there is no ‘thinning’ on the curves or corners.
