The Tulip Chair inspired by Eero Saarinen

Designed as an exercise in clarifying form, Eero Saarinen's Tulip Chair set new standards for modern design and became an immediate classic in 1956.

Eero Saarinen's pedestal concept for the 1956 Knoll Collection solved a particular design problem: "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, uneasy world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." The result was an iconic expression of modernism which has been included in museum collections around the world.

Often it is the simplest idea that makes the biggest impact. And this is certainly the case with Eero Saarinen's Tulip chair. Designed in 1956, Saarinen's idea was to eliminate the chair legs, thus the chair is elegantly supported by a single stem connected to a curved base. Eero Saarinen succeeded in distilling modern dining designs into sculptural, holistic structures.

Our swiveling Tulip Chair is manufactured with fibreglass which is a very strong and malleable material that allows the producer to incorporate curves and twists. Our lacquered paint finish is of a very high standard and there is no ‘thinning’ on the curves or corners.

Parker Knoll’s original Tulip Chair had a metal base and fiberglass seat shell. Although true to the shape, our version is manufactured totally from fiberglass so it is moderately priced but still robust.

The seat has a removable upholstered cushion; we give you a red cushion for each chair, which are interchangeable.
